Link Diocese

Madras – 1979 – 2016.  Link has ended.

Stavanger - Convener - The Reverend Canon Cameron Butland. There have been visits by the Stavanger Youth Council in 2015 and the Pilgrimage Group in 2014.  A reciprocal visit by young people is being made in October 2016 along with a visit by members of the Link Committee.  The Diocese is supported by the Norwegian Mission Society who have substantial links with parishes in the county.

Zululand - Convener – The Reverend Rod Allon-Smith.  Following numerous exchange visits (in both directions) involving the Mothers’ Union during the 10 years up to 2010, other visits have followed:  Reverend Philip Dorling, a Carlisle priest, was placed in Vryheid from 2010-2012.  Sabbatical visits have been made to Zululand from Carlisle clergy and in 2015 and 2016, the Zululand Clergy Summer Schools were led by clergy or laity from Carlisle.  We were well represented by Bishop Robert and Christine Freeman at his enthronement in April 2016 of the new Bishop of Zululand, Bishop Monument Makhanya.  The hope is that an official Diocesan group from Carlisle will visit Zululand in 2017.

Northern Argentina - Convener - Mr David Holt (All Saints, Cockermouth) holt9ew@btinternet.com. Following the establishment of the link in 1995, we have supported a range of projects from a soup kitchen to refurbishment of the bungalow for Bishop Nick and Catherine Drayson.  A ‘Faith in Partnership’ agreement was signed by Bishops Nick and James in June 2013.  The Northern Argentina team is looking at ways in which we are able to learn from each other to help develop the link.  A number of exchange visits by clergy and lay people have already taken place.
